No Kindness Too Soon - Sylvain Neuvel

If you have not read any of Sylvain Neuvel’s work yet… I think you have missed something truly exceptional.

My first encounter with Mr. Neuvel’s work was when I picked up his novel Sleeping Giants, the first in his Themis Files trilogy. It’s a story about scientists who are discovering parts of giant robots across the globe. The origin of these machines is not known, and neither is their purpose. The story leads into the world of bizarre sci-fi. The story unfolds and we are thrown into the world of science, space, aliens, and possibly, God. It’s a really unusual story. And any fan of sci-fi, would enjoy it immensely.

So when I was looking for a quick stop-gap between my big novels era, I picked this Audible Original by Sylvain. And God, was it a delight.

No kindness too soon, starts with a mysterious radio signal. It’s received from a neighbouring star system. As expected, NASA is investigating. A group of scientists are pulled from all corners of the western world and are basically imprisoned into a scientific facility in the Grand Canyon. And this little novella is the story about all these different minds and their struggle to understand the message. While the scientists are busy decoding, the world is going through a series of unexplained catastrophes.

Like I mentioned, this is a novella. A two hour audiobook on audible. But all through the time, trust you me, you will go through a whole gamut of emotions. There is a lot of science in it, but it is all made logical. It isn’t too heavy. As the story proceeds, you get into a bunch more science. But it isn’t a one way ride. Like I mentioned, it’s a group of scientists, who all come from different walks of life and science. So they have a lot of conflicting viewpoints. So as  a reader, you get to see /  hear both side of the argument… should we talk to the aliens?

It's an interesting experience. It’s not a gloom doom novel. It does have a doomsday novel feel. As the story unfolds the fear that the world is going to end, builds and builds. And when the climax comes… it comes with a wonderful twist. REALLY unexpected and REALLY interesting.

It’s a novella that has everything… intrigue, mystery, fast-paced narration, suspense, and an Oh-So-Good ending. This little gem gives you a good fun two hours. The cast is brilliant, narrative smart, the IDEA is brilliant and the scientific arguments even brighter.

anyone who loves a doomsday novel, needs to pick this one up ASAP.
